Look at it this way, we’ve built a bunch of machines and a lot of them are obviously at cross purposes with human thriving but still they run.
So either:

a) we can’t turn them off, but someone else can, and will OR
b) we can’t turn them off, but someone else can, and won’t OR
c) no one can turn them off OR
d) no one will turn them off, the chance of becoming rich and powerful being what it is.
