And, yes to the absence of non-verbal cues making things harder for humans. It‘s worse when folks try to compensate or work around it with gimmicky ways of talking.

Also, a sort of tokenization thing happens in American english and the web accelerates it. Easy to set off someone's alarm system by saying, say ‘discriminating’ rather than ‘determining’ or other noise like this.

And mood, as @odd mentions, has a lot to do with what we allow ourselves at any given moment. I know if I'm looking for an opportunity to snark and point and pat myself on the back I'll find one. Sigh.

I have no advice. I try to type like I talk, or would talk if I could stop interrupting myself...
