@rom it’s all good; a clue to how casual we are about the entire edifice is in the national anthem, that part about oh, hey, uh, like is the flag still there? Oh, right. Cool! Hey, it’s still there folks!

@kissane I guess I forgot e) anyone can turn them off for themselves, of course, none of this being mandatory in any compelling sense.

@kissane et al.

Look at it this way, we’ve built a bunch of machines and a lot of them are obviously at cross purposes with human thriving but still they run.
So either:

a) we can’t turn them off, but someone else can, and will OR
b) we can’t turn them off, but someone else can, and won’t OR
c) no one can turn them off OR
d) no one will turn them off, the chance of becoming rich and powerful being what it is.

@jdp23 as for \@jilliancyork.com piece, well, bashing white men is a remarkably empty gesture, and the links seem mostly ads or pay walled academia.

But whatevs. Some white guys are deeply damaged and deeply damaging. No doubt. And I want to know who they are.

You know what, I want to know who those sorts are, no matter what their melanin flavor, or genital arrangements, or favorite cosmic wiggler happens to be. So, no matter their race, nor their gender, or religion, or orientation, or age, or ethnic heritage—you get it—none of that ensures an individuals capacity for civility.

@jdp23 re: \@natematias@social.coop article, I think the lessons fail to concede that the entire framework presumes that only a company or consortium can do this and everything else is moot. That’s true in capitalism only land, but also dumb in other places. Of course, identity and it’s facets of anonymity and pseudo-anonymity and so on must be controlled by each individual, tut there is hardly a commercial interest in making individuals even more powerful and responsible. SO it is hard to conceive of other avenues OUTSIDE of a commercial proposition.

Look, us citizens have SSN’s. Are we all zombie prisoners because of this obtaining reality? No. Geebus, we all carry around phones that contain SO MUCH TECH but 99% haven’t a clue what they even are, never mind what implications it could have for them. ANYWAY, if we are comfortable getting tagged at birth, and then rewarded with a tracking device when we are estimated to have enough "self-control", then why not hand everyone a site while we’re at it. Here’s your SSN, here’s your, uh, 'phone', I guess, and here's the temp login for ssn@auth.gov...

@tunguska

yes, almost every corner of this hyper cube seems to have a waaaay too big luggage compartment... ...and you are quite right to point out that considerations of if or when punishment is unavoidable keeps us out in the conversational fringes with the pathologically insincere. Not a great place to begin with, and definitely not the only place to effect positive evolution.

@kissane et al. (That means everyone if you’re not into the whole latin thing...which is cool...) So much smart talking on this topic. Thank you all for providing some unavoidable learning.
